Loft bunk

The rooms of my kids were not really large at our old home, so building a loft bunk was a great thing to have more space in the room. In my first version I had only one level at the top of the bunk to use the space below for a couch or a desk. After a while I have upgraded the bunk with a second level to have two sleeping levels.

I have chosen the dimensions so that in the lower and upper deck one can sit on a mattress without bumping your head. You could also use the lower deck as sofa.

I also provided a tray on the lower deck towards the wall to put some books or a buzzer on.

My requirements/features:

  • extreme stable
  • enough space to sit on both decks
  • space for 1000mm wide mattresses
  • fast build without larger woodworking overhead

I have built the bunk out of 54mm squared spruce timber which was already planed when I got it from the store. I only had to cut it by my compound miter saw to get the right lengths and sand off the edges. Then I predrilled all holes and and used carriage bolts with a special nut. The bolts and nuts both have rounded ends to avoid any injuries. It took about two days to build this bunk, maybe it looks a bit bulky but for me it has been a good and fast way building a solid and durable bunk at a good price.

Used Tools: my compound miter saw Makita LS1018L and a drill.

Difficulty: Appropriate for all beginners

Hope you like it, I really would appreciate if you leave me a comment below.
